Income Tax Preparation Tips
Regarding Property and Excise Taxes Paid

Property Tax

For most taxpayers, the property taxes paid in a given calendar year will be from two different Brewer tax bills. This is because the City’s fiscal year runs from July-June, and taxes are due in two installments: the first in September and the second in March. Thus, for the typical, on time taxpayer the amount of property tax paid in calendar year 2008 that you might report on your 2008 income tax form would include the following:

1.       The amount you paid in March 2008
(the 2nd installment of the 2008 tax bill you received August 2007).

2.       The amount you paid in September 2008
(the 1st installment of the 2009 tax bill you received August 2008).

The Brewer Tax Office can assist you with your payment history if necessary, but for fast reference we encourage you to keep a copy of your tax bills and payments receipts with your income tax records.

Motor Vehicle Excise Tax

You can find the amount of excise tax you paid on your registration.  It will also be on the receipt you receive. Keep in mind that registration and agency fees are not deductible. Make sure the date on the registration or receipt matches the year for which you are filing taxes. Make it a habit to file your vehicle registration receipts with your tax documents.
