ADOPT A SCHOOL PROGRAM

In 1997, the Facility staff started a catch basin stenciling program.  One day each year in May is set aside for teams of operators and students to scout the City and stencil storm drain catch basins with "DO NOT DUMP. GOES TO RIVER."   This program has been very successful, and each year the students look forward to spending the day outside in the the sunshine doing their part for the City and the environment.

The Adopt a School Program started by the Facility staff 3 years ago has been a very effective educational tool for the BWPCF. The intent of the program is to educate the children of Brewer of the importance of wastewater treatment and its role in preserving a clean environment. We feel that if the children are educated at a young age regarding the environment, then when they become older they will be our ally not our enemy.

Facility Operators who run the program perform classroom lectures, slide shows, and answer all questions prior to inviting the students to the Facility for a plant tour. As part of the program, the students participated in a poster contest where the author of the top three poster received prizes. The BWPCF staff conducted the judging. The theme of the poster contest was " What Does Clean Water Mean To Me". This program has been received very positively by the teachers and the students of the Brewer Middle School Science class and we plan on continuing the Program for many years to come.
