Recycling Update– Elm Street Drop-Off Center

The City of Brewer offers two recycling options to residents: curbside as well as a drop-off center located at the landfill on Elm Street.

The City of Brewer Recycling Drop-off Center, which was relocated to the landfill from Pierce Road on July 1, 2000, has experienced a high volume of recycling traffic. The items currently being recycled at the new location and curbside are bi-metal cans, #2 plastic, cardboard, newsprint and mixed glass. Newsprint and cardboard have been the two most recycled items to date at the drop-off location. Also being recycled from the landfill location is scrap metal, leaves and yard waste:

Scrap Metal- This is an important area of the City recycling effort because the refuse collection contractors will no longer pick up metal curbside. Some items cannot be recycled and are considered “foreign material”. If you are unsure if particular items should be placed at the landfill see the Landfill Operator.

Leaf- The City funds a leaf pickup program each Fall for all Brewer residents. In addition, the City maintains an area at the landfill exclusively for leaf disposal. If residents have leaves to dispose of at any time spring through fall, you may bring them to the landfill. Because we compost the leaves and make the compost available to the public, the City asks that you deliver your leaves in biodegradable bags or dump the leaves from the plastic bags, upon arrival.

Yard waste- Brewer citizen may dispose of yard waste at the landfill that will be mixed with the leaves in a compost process that will be made available to the public once the composting process is complete. No trees, sticks, branches or brush will be accepted at the compost location.

The City now has a full-time Recycling Coordinator, Daisy Taylor, (207)989-8433, at the landfill Drop-off location. If you have any questions regarding recycling or leaf/yard waste disposal location, ask Daisy. She is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the recycling program and will be happy to help you in any way.

If you have any questions about the city recycling program call the Brewer Landfill and Recycling Center at 989-8433.
