Development Update Spring 2002 This
year’s light snowfall and early thaw may not be welcome to skiers and
snowmobilers, but to developers it’s a blessing. An early start is now
possible on many of the City’s significant development projects, both private
and public. In
early March, Eastern Maine Healthcare (EMH) began construction of their new
120,000 square foot administration building on Whiting Hill. Current plans are
for the building to be complete late this year, with occupancy expected in
December or January. “The early start of Spring has definitely helped us
out,” said Ken Hews, Executive Vice President for EMH. We’re several weeks
ahead of schedule, and can’t wait to see the building go up.” Once this
first building is complete, it is expected to house nearly 250 EMH employees.
Three other buildings are also planned for the site, to be constructed in future
years. The
Muddy Rudder is coming to Brewer! The Muddy Rudder, a $1.6 million dollar high-end restaurant project that was announced by City and company officials in February 2002, is also pursuing an aggressive development posture. Peter Anastos, President of Maine Course Hospitality Group (the parent company for the Muddy Rudder), has indicated that he intends on opening the doors of the restaurant on Penobscot Landing this summer.
