Brewer Credit Union plans get Brewer panel OK
Tuesday, February 08, 2005

BREWER - A credit union became the third planned development on newly opened Dirigo Drive after the Planning Board approved a 3,300-square foot branch office site plan on Monday night. Brewer Federal Credit Union gained approval, with 11 minor conditions, to build a second financial institution in the city. The other location is on North Main Street.

"It will transform a vacant lot into a welcome business addition that will look pleasing to the eye and will be beneficial to the city," City Planner Linda Johns said after the meeting.

Dirigo Drive opened in November and connects Parkway South to Green Point Road, Sparks Avenue, Whiting Hill Road and Wilson Street, near the junction of I-395.

The credit union's full-service branch office will be located on the right after the junction of Sparks Avenue when heading toward outer Wilson Street. The facility, with drive-through and walk-in service, is expected to cost $1.3 million to build.

"We'd like to break ground this summer," President and CEO Barry Jordan said after gaining approval for the project.

Applying for permits and finding a building contractor to do the work still need to be accomplished before the project can move forward, he said.

The 11 conditions mostly deal with providing copies of permits and landscaping plans and paying impact fees that total $33,212.

The last condition is an agreement to correct any storm water drainage issues that arise after construction with neighboring properties.

Other Dirigo Drive developments include Bangor Federal Credit Union, located at the Parkway South entrance of the new roadway, which opened in late November, and the nearly complete Eastern Maine Emergency Veterinary Clinic located across the street.
