Code Enforcement Office
Brewer City Hall
80 North Main Street
Brewer, ME 04412
(207)989-7790

It is the goal of Brewer Code Enforcement to help Brewer homeowners understand and meet
the City of Brewer code requirements with the least possible inconvenience to the
homeowner.
The Code Enforcement Office issues the following permits which are required before the
indicated work is started:
Building Permit - 1) new structure; 2) expansion of an
existing structure; 3) structural repair or alteration; 4) removing or adding wall; 5)
changing window or door size; 6) fence; 7) deck; 8) building demolition; and 9) moving a
building.
Electrical Permit - 1) new electrical wiring; 2) new electrical
equipment (except plug-in type equipment); and 3) alternation or addition to existing
equipment or wiring
Oil Burner Permit - 1) new or replacement oil burner; 2) new or replacement
fuel supply tank of ten gallons or more; 3) new or replacement wood stove; and, 4) new or
replacement chimney
Plumbing Permit - 1) new or replacement water distribution or drainage pipes;
2) new or replacement hot water storage tank heater; 3) relocation of pipes, valves,
fixtures and drains; and 4) new or replacement or alteration of subsurface wastewater
disposal system
Sewer Connection Permit - connection of new structure or expanding existing
structure
Sign Permit - new, replacement or altered sign
Street Opening Permit - digging in street right-of-way
The City Engineer issues permits for filling and grading.
The homeowner of a single-family dwelling can be issued all of the above permits provided
that the homeowner actually does the work. Anyone other than the homeowner doing
electrical, oil burner or plumbing work must be licensed for the trade. Any licensed
contractor must get a separate permit.
The cost of any required permit is usually very small compared to the cost of the project.
Inspections are made at a mutually convenient time in order to ascertain compliance with
safety and technical standards.
Zoning standards require property line setbacks for structures and also impose certain use
restrictions depending on the zone. It is a good idea to check the requirements for any
major project well before work is planned to begin.
Before a new or renovated structure can be occupied, a Certificate of Occupancy is
required from the Brewer Code Enforcement Office.
