| Residents with
concerns regarding domestic or wild animals may contact the
Animal Control Officer by calling the
Brewer Police Department, 989-7003.

DOGS RUNNING AT LARGE
Maine law and city ordinance provide that all dogs off the owner or keeper's
property be controlled by a lease or be under the owner or keeper's voice
command.
DISPOSAL OF DOG FECES
The owner or keeper of any dog is required to remove any fecal matter his or
her dog deposits on any city street or property other than the property of the
owner or keeper.
DOG LICENSING AND CAT IMMUNIZATION
Dog licenses are due January 1st of each year. Maine law provides that any
dog 6 months old or older must be licensed by the municipal clerk. The fee for
license is $6.00 if the dog has been spayed or neutered (proof of such procedure
must be presented) or $10.00 if the dog has not not been spayed or neutered and
is capable of producing offspring. A certificate of proof of rabies vaccination
must also be presented at the time of licensing. Maine law also requires that
all cats be immunized against rabies although there is no requirement that cats
be licensed.
LIVE TRAPS
The City has two traps to humanely capture nuisance animals. These traps are
on loan to city residents and may be obtained at the City Clerk's office
(989-7050). Any person capturing nuisance cats or dogs in these traps, will be
responsible for contacting the Animal Control Officer who will transport them to
the Bangor Humane Society. The city has a contract with the humane society to
provide shelter for stray dogs and cats. Any wild animals captured in city traps
will be released in a rural woods area at the responsibility of the person
borrowing the trap. Animal control handles domestic animals only.
ROAD KILL
Residents are asked to call the Brewer Public Works Department (989-7800) to
report animals killed on the highway. Employees of that department have been
trained to safely handle road kill and transport it to the cremation facility at
the humane society.
INJURED OR SICK ANIMALS
Residents are cautioned against handling injured or sick animals. The Animal
Control Officer should be contacted to attend to such animals as she is trained
in the safe handling of these animals.
CITY ORDINANCE
To obtain the complete text of the city ordinance on animal control, contact
the City Clerk's officer (989-7050).
