NOTICE:  HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION.  36 M.R.S.A. § 683.  For property tax years beginning on or after April 1, 2010, the homestead exemption amount is decreased from $13,000 to $10,000.  This decrease is effective as of April 1, 2010.   

This decrease by the State will effect residential property owners in the City of Brewer that are currently receiving the Homestead Exemption.

Homestead Exemption

If you have owned your present home or a home in the State of Maine for the previous 12 months and it is your primary residence, you may be entitled to the State of Maine Homestead Exemption.

Homestead Exemption Amount.
The just value of $10,000 of the homestead of a permanent resident of this State who has owned a homestead in this State is exempt from taxation. In determining the local assessed value of the exemption, the assessor shall multiply the amount of the exemption by the ratio of current just value upon which the assessment is based.

The Homestead Application form must be submitted to the Assessing Department prior to April 1 of the year in which you first seek the exemption.

If you do not have the homestead exemption listed as a deduction on your current tax bill, an exemption form can be obtained in the Assessing Department or by visiting the link below to the State of Maine website where you can download a printout of the exemption form.
